Biblical Examples of Retreats

Jesus‘ Example
One of the most compelling aspects of Jesus‘ ministry is His consistent practice of taking time to retreat alone, away from the crowds and even His closest disciples, to pray and rejuvenate. The Scriptures provide numerous accounts of these moments:
• Luke 5:16: And he withdrew himself into the wilderness and prayed.
• Mark 6:31: And he said unto them, come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
• Matthew 14:23: And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
The practice of retreats is deeply Biblical, offering significant benefits for spiritual renewal, rest, and reflection. As modelled by Jesus and His disciples, withdrawing to solitary places to pray and rest is indispensable for maintaining a healthy spiritual, emotional, and physical life. Whether through personal times of solitude or organized community retreats, incorporating these practices can lead to profound personal transformation and closer intimacy with God.
